TNG Visual Effects provides 3D scanning services to the visual effects industry. 3D scanning is the process of digitally capturing a person, object, vehicle, building, or environment for use in film, telelvsion, video games, etc. We've also lent our services to other industries for 3D printing and for marketing merchandise and art. This service can be used for crime scene investigation, the creation of prosthetics, and to build out a virtual experience online.

With over 10 years of experience in the 3D scanning industry, we have honed our technique in 3D scanning alongside the production crews on set. Our service includes a professional photo shoot, which is necessary for both color textures and reference to ensure accuracy of the real-life counterpart.

We are highly mobile and can bring our services to any location. Our headquarters are in Los Angeles, California, with satellite locations in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and Lafayette, Louisiana. We are also expanding into New York, Toronto and Montreal. As veterans in this industry, we understand short time-frames and tight budgets.

The data we provide in our full service is retopoligized color textured 3d models in .OBJ format with displacement maps and normal maps, which are generated through the scan data for more accurate results. Other maps are available on request, and at any dimensions you may need (even 8k).

Props and objects really flesh out a scene to make it look more synonymous with real life.

There is an array of techniques and scanners to utilize when 3D scanning, depending on location, material, shape, size, color, and reflection. Although we specialize in scanning human heads and bodies, we commonly scan shoes which are considered part of the body. We are able to capture the entire sole and most of the inside of a shoe. There is a difference between the shoe being on someone's foot in a scene, and having the shoe being the main focus as it would in a commercial. Any time a 3D object or character is going to be closer to the screen, the quality must be increased in order to compensate. The textures should be a high enough resolution to avoid pixelation, and so that a wide enough spectrum of colors exist to give nice gradients and overall balance and composition.

Utilizing multiple objects and/or props help create realistic looking assets.

For smaller props, we are able to use a scanner with accurate measurements (down to .05 mm). Our specific type of 3D scanner captures more depth than most scanners and photogrammetry itself. This is important for both props and people. The eyes, nose, lips, and ears have a level of depth that needs to be captured to sell the realism. Ears are very intricate, and a great deal of time could be spent trying to recreate the data that you could simply have from the start.

Understanding the relation between 3D scan data and real life, and incorporating it into projects.

An object can be 3D modeled from scratch using picture reference, but what is its accuracy compared to the real thing? 3D scan data acts as a reference for position and scale. For example if we scan a person's head with sunglasses on or a hat on, the size, position and how it sits on the persons head or face is correct. If eccentricities like an asymmetries that causes one side to be higher or lower, it will be captured. The skill of an artist, the artists' interpretation, and any kind of art style an artist may have will not factor into the final result when utilizing good 3D scan data opposed to doing everything from scratch.

 

 

TNG has experience especially with props such as jewelry or watches.

3D scanning any given object requires a thought-process and a technique to ideally provide full coverage, and to get the most possible resolution for the given size and shape of an object. The reference photography of an object is also essential, and must be done adequately. Some objects may have reflections or surfaces which are difficult and even seemingly impossible to capture correctly, but our experience affords us a deep pool of knowledge to grasp from to ensure the utmost quality and service.
